Defenseman Andy Branigan donned the pads one night for the NHL's Brooklyn American in lieu of the injured Charlie Rayner.
Andy Branigan was born in Winnipeg in 1922. He lived at 185 Johnson Ave and attended Lord Selkirk School until he left home to play hockey. He belonged to the Kenora Canoe Club where he loved to canoe and where he first met his future wife.
Branigan began his career as a defenceman playing with the Winnipeg Monarchs of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Branigan played box lacrosse in Winnipeg to stay in condition as well as practice his reflexes. He dropped out of high school at 16 to focus on working and playing hockey.
