The first European netminder to start an NHL game had some notorious run-ins with Don Cherry.
One of the teams that the ever-colourful Don Cherry coached over the years was the Colorado Rockies in 1979- 80. It was during this stint that Cherry coached Swedish netminder Hardy Astrom. Yes, the Hardy Astrom that Don Cherry used as his whipping boy and dubbed him as “The Swedish Sieve” on Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts for years to come.
