The First Mustached Man

Winnipeg's Andy Blair was the first NHL player in league history to regularly sport a mustache on the ice.

Fun fact: Andy Blair was the first NHL player in league history to sport any kind of mustache on a regular basis during their playing career. A clutch playoff performer, Blair was always a consistent goal scorer and playmaker and his peculiar whirling rushes had a very strong crowd appeal, which always made Blair a fan favourite.

At 6’2’’ and 180 lbs, Blair was a lanky centreman of his time. A distant cousin of the great Syl Apps and Murray Murdoch and a relative of Dave and Ken Dryden as well, Blair was quite the athlete growing up, starring in football, rugby, track and field and even golf. It was hockey however that would become his primary passion. Murray Murdoch once recalled how he himself was the best young kid playing hockey in Winnipeg when he was 12 years old. That is until Andy Blair showed up at 8 and was skating rings around him.
