Remembering Walt Cunningham (1914-2003)
Winnipeg's Walt Cunningham came so close to making the NHL in the 1930s.
Walt Cunningham was born on September 4th, 1914 in Winnipeg.
Walt grew up in the Weston area of town and was schooled at Cecil Rhodes and Daniel Mac Collegiate. An excellent all round athlete, his passions were hockey, curling and golf.
He played his minor hockey in Winnipeg and had tryouts with the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. As member of the New York Rangers farm team, The New York Rovers, he had the good fortune to be called up on several occasions.
Playing for the Selkirk Fishermen junior team, Cunningham’s play caught the eye of Boston Bruins GM Art Ross. Walt would attend Boston’s camp in 1934 and was offered a minor league spot, but he decided to stay another year with the Selkirk Seniors.
