The last member of the Montreal Canadiens 1953 Stanley Cup winning team has passed away.

Paul Masnick was 92 years old when he died on March 23, 2024.

When I first met up with Masnick in early 2020, he was all that was left of that 1953 team. He was living quietly alone in Barrie, Ontario in a tall apartment building overlooking Kempenfelt Bay. He didn’t own a television or a car, and bussed around to get his groceries and visit his girlfriend. 

Paul Masnick was born in Wakaw, SK, on April 14th, 1931 to Ukrainian parents. The youngest of four (one brother, two sisters), Masnick was the family’s only hockey player. His family soon after moved into Regina where he grew up in the east end of town.
