Remembering Chick Zamick
Winnipeg's Chick Zamick went on to a stellar career as one of the top scorers in the history of professional hockey in England.
Victor “Chick” Zamick was one of the finest scorers in the history of Great Britain professional hockey.
Between 1947 and 1958, the 5’7”, 140lb centreman accumulated a staggering 1,423 points, in a period when the game was noted for low scoring games. This remarkable feat was recognized at the time as Zamick was voted onto nine consecutive end-of-season All-Star teams.
Born August 16th, 1926 in Winnipeg Manitoba, Victor Zamick was one of twelve children of parents originally from the Ukraine. He gained his nickname ‘Chick’ from Chiclets coated chewing gum with 12 sticks per packet.
Growing up in a Jewish household in the North End of Winnipeg, Zamick’s family was poor.
He found his first pair of ice skates in a dust bin, and they were several sizes to big so he had to stuff them with newspaper so he could play in them,” said Chick’s granddaughter Natalie Zamick. “All the boys drove mom crazy playing hockey in the house.”
