Ken Dryden Has Local Manitoba Connection
Ken Dryden's father hailed from the tiny hamlet of Domain, which is about 20 minutes south of Winnipeg.
There is a distinct connection between Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender Ken Dryden and one tiny southern Manitoba village.
The small hamlet of Domain’s first early settlers were actually from the United States in the late 1800s. The first store was opened in 1901 by a North Dakotan, and soon, there were also new arrivals from Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa.
Domain was also originally named Shanawan by the CPR. In 1925, the CPR changed it to Selburn to save freight customers, confusing it with Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. The name lasted only about a year before being changed again to Domain. Residents successfully petitioned the federal government in 1933 to rename the Shanawan post office to match.
