Hamilton Tigers Strike Of 1925 Reaches 100-Year Anniversary
The 1924-25 Hamilton Tigers famously went on strike during the playoffs over unpaid wages by the team owner and NHL. The team was ultimately fold and sold to pave the way for the New York Americans.
The 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs which have recently wrapped up marked the 100th anniversary of the infamous Hamilton Tigers players’ strike — a pivotal moment in hockey history that saw the team lose its NHL franchise forever.
In 1925, the Tigers refused to participate in the NHL playoffs unless each player received an additional $200 for six extra games played during the regular season. Despite finishing first in the 1924–25 NHL regular season, the players went on strike ahead of the championship series.
