Eddie “Spider” Mazur was born in Winnipeg on July 25th, 1929. His parents immigrated to Canada from Poland in 1909. His father, Joseph, was employed as a carman in the Fort Rouge Car Department of the Canadian National Railways.

Mazur grew up in Fort Rouge in a house at 714 Walker Avenue and learned to skate and play hockey as a youngster at the nearby Lord Roberts Community Club. He went to Lord Roberts School and Kelvin High School. The talented left winger won Provincial titles throughout his minor hockey career and won juvenile and junior titles with the Winnipeg Monarchs.
