Brandon’s Gord Lane is a name that you might not be familiar with, but he was an integral piece of the New York Islanders dynasty squad of the early 1980's that won four straight Stanley Cup's and nineteen consecutive playoff series', the latter a record which will likely never be broken.

It's been said that every championship team needs that one player to do the little things that may go unnoticed, but certainly not unappreciated. Gord Lane was the defender the Islanders needed to help bring greatness to Long Island.

"The big thing about our hockey club is that everyone brought a little something different to the table. Gordie Lane was an individual who came along to the Isles just before I did, and he was a very steady defensemen. He was a smart guy on the ice who made simple plays," recalls former teammate Butch Goring. "If you ask Billy Smith who his favorite defensemen was on the Islanders, I'm pretty sure he's going to tell you it was Gordie Lane because he played a similar game to Billy in many ways despite playing different positions!"

Gord Lane was born in Brandon on March 31st 1953. "Growing up there in Brandon in the fifties and sixties was something else," Gord recalls. "Our television had one channel, so we mostly played outside as kids. Anybody who grows up there understands that you go play hockey from the time you can walk, that's just what you do, and I was no different."
