Dick Kowcinak was born in Winnipeg on May 25, 1917.

The Kowcinak family lived on 455 Winterton Street in East Kildonan, and Dick and his four siblings attended nearby Monroe Public School growing up.

“He lived in a little white house on that street,” recalled Kowcinak’s daughter Judy Kurtz. “It had basement windows he used to sneak in and out of to attend ‘forbidden’ outings! His older sister Mary covered for him and made up excuses for his absences!”
